Projection, reparations and Navalny
Russia deserves reparations like I deserve Salmah Hayek's phone number
Westerners love to project onto other people, just like most cultures.
This projection has terrible consequences. We think that somebody is ‘good’ because they oppose the ‘bad’.
Whether the CIA and ‘our son of a bitch’ principle, Franco and the Greek colonels, the UK’s love of Pinochet, Saddam Hussein when fighting Khomeini, Osama Bin Laden when he was fighting the Soviets, Hermann Goring during the 1938 Munich Crisis (see Birds of Prey, Neville Henderson going shooting with him), Ngo Dinh Diem, genocidal Saudis....
Good guy vs bad guy - dichotomy is fail. Both can be bad guys. Americans in particular suffer from our son of a bitch disease, while the French & British turn post-imperial faux real-politik into some kind of sophisticated virtue when its just American brutal naivete rebranded as Machiavellian.
Navalny might be better than Putin. But he’s not a ‘good guy’. Might be worse for his neighbors if he builds a clean effective disciplined army. His minions write this:
Согласится ли Запад после войны провести план Маршалла не только для Украины, но и для России?

Will the West agree after the war to carry out the Marshall Plan not only for Ukraine, but also for Russia? “It is needed so that there is no again this feeling of injustice, but that there is a feeling of gratitude and a desire to re-establish relations.”
They were also heavily promoting the video showing dead Russians after a surrender to Ukrainians… until they deleted their tweets.
Navalny is a nationalist autocrat. His minions are nationalist autocrats.
So Navalny’s minions are demanding money from Europe? I’ve got an idea:
@politica_media I hear Russia has some fabulously wealthy people called oligarchs who could have their wealth confiscated instead of Europeans and Americans paying to rebuild their genocidal country (Germany was ashes after WW2 but Russians wealth was stolen).
— Dustin Du Cane (@DustinDuCane) 9:32 AM ∙ Nov 21, 2022
And Russia should not get a SINGLE PENNY FROM EUROPE. A SINGLE EURO, ZLOTY, DOLLAR OR POUND.
Russia should instead be paying reparations to Ukraine for the next fifty years.
On the scale of those of the Franco-Prussian War. Not the smaller Versailles ones (Sally Marks, ‘The Myths of Reparations’, Central European History 11, no. 3 (1978): 231–55, https://www.jstor.org/stable/4545835). And there should be consideration on how to stamp out any nonsense stab-in-the-back or revanchism. That will involve massive confiscation in Russia which distributes money to Ukraine and to normal Russians, in order to bribe them into supporting the purging of autocraticism, on a level greater than the rather partially failed deNazification (the Nazis sins were much greater BUT deNazification was a joke after 1946 - thank you above all America - our bastard works out great doesn’t it? See Krupp the evil oligarch who bears more responsibility for atrocities than possibly even Prigozhin. Krupp maniuplated and bribed his way to freedom but Prigozhin with his terrible but possibly lesser sins should spend life in prison, penniless. Shame on his lawyers, shame).
Really.
Navalny’s freshfaced little autocrats will be just as evil, corrupt, nationalist and racist as Putin’s security aparatchiks when they get to power. This is a lesson of history that repeats unless radical steps are taken.
Russia's comparatively 'liberal' rulers -- Alexander II, Kerensky, Gorbachev, Yeltsin -- are notable for turning more and more reactionary over the time they spent in office, and being replaced by full-blown authoritarians (in Gorbachev's case thankfully very briefly).

But you’re going why did Western Germany and Japan receive Western aid after their genocidal wars which far eclipse what Russia has done (up to now in this particular war, cough Holodomor)?
Well… they were turned into dust and America figured out it was better to rebuild them as bulwarks of capitalism against communism than join the Soviet bloc as impoverished hotbeds of revolution. Both countries could have been rebuilt into the equivalent of East Germany if taken over by the reds.
Just a reminder: The Marshall plan for Germany had a precondition of total destruction of most German cities, occupation of Germany, cutting-off huge parts of the territory, a total reform of the very statehood of Germany, and a division of Germany for 45 years.
— Sergej Sumlenny (@sumlenny) 12:29 PM ∙ Nov 21, 2022
Russia blocked German reparations and the Marshall Plan to Poland and the rest of the Soviet bloc, while looting everything they could from Germany for use of the rodina and only the rodina.
Russia has a tiny ruling class of incredibly rich criminals. Every oligarch has blood on their hands. They’re all kleptocrats who have their positions because of their links with Putin. Including and maybe above all those hiding in the West. Confiscate their stolen wealth and redistribute to Ukraine (first) and Russia (what remains and under supervision so as not to create new oligarchs. And keep the Germans and Americans away from this because they can’t handle Russians).
These Russian Nazi-liberals from Navalny are setting up their own stab-in-the-back myth and revanchism. Their Russian victim equivalency is disgusting - its neverchanging in the ‘good Russian’ myth, like it was with the ‘good Germans’, aka Stalin/Putin/Hitler’s first victim was their own people BS. Russians, the eternal victims. When Navalny’s liberal fascists don’t get fawned over by Ukrainians and Poles and Balts, they’ll light their own gas ovens.
UPDATE 22/11/2022
Point proven.
How do Russian liberals differ from Putinists, exactly? The same hateful, Ukrainophobic rhetoric, only a bit more ornate.
— Dr. Vasilina Orlova (Василина Орлова) (@vasilina_orlova) 5:40 AM ∙ Nov 22, 2022
This is called Russian imperialism. It doesn't abstain from bashing a culture, a nation, and a statehood that it currently tries to obliterate militarily.
UPDATE 2 - 22/11/2022
Now threatening firing critics:
@polidemitolog @VesnaDamjanic @business @navalny @BloombergAdrSrb @bloomberg_adria What’s striking about your tweets is not your meanness (this site is horrible, I know), but your stupidity and laziness to even check who you are talking about. If I were your editor, I’d fire your for that alone.

UPDATE 3 - 23/11/2022
Russia, opposition and "Marshall Plan for post-Putin Russia".
— Anton Barbashin (@ABarbashin) 12:47 PM ∙ Nov 22, 2022
This seems like one of those big topics that get people going nuts on twitter. "How dare they".
I remember this idea going around as early as 2011 but there was always a big catch
Thread 1/10
Great thread which of course had the Navalny tankies all riled up. The comments show no sense of irony when they say the exact things that Ilves is pointing out.
Some PR advice for Russian liberals: (a thread)
— toomas ilves a.k.a. @toomas_ilves@mastodon.social (@IlvesToomas) 2:15 PM ∙ Nov 22, 2022
1. Stop being so self-absorbed. Don’t talk about a “Marshall Plan” for Russia when those who would pay for it read daily accounts of new atrocities in Ukraine
2. Don’t call Westerners Nazis when they do want Russians to travel 1/n
UPDATE 4 29/10/2023
Good Russians being Good Russians.
Self-centered narcissist Paris cafe inhabiting fans of Lenin. Wherein the Good Russians (TM) give the example of Lenin and the Bolsheiviks as the way forward for Russia and how an emigre elite can affect real change. I wish I was joking. I was reading the nonsense about De Gaulle and thought, are they about to talk about Lenin? And they did.
Fuck off.
- Russians protesting war“Jewish pogrom at the airport,” Azman said on X/Twitter. “There is a danger of lynching! Policee [sic] do nothing! Very dangerous!!! I pray!!!”
“Appalling videos,” Zelensky said in a statement on X/Twitter. “This is not an isolated incident in Makhachkala, but rather part of Russia’s widespread culture of hatred toward other nations, which is propagated by state television, pundits, and authorities. The Russian foreign minister has made a series of antisemitic remarks in the last year.”
The attack comes after days of antisemitic outrages across Russia’s north Caucus region.
Separately, the Israeli foreign minister summoned the Russian ambassador over a visit of multiple Hamas officials to Moscow, according to Axios.
